Lighting Size and Placement Guide

A practical starting point for choosing fixture scale, hanging height and spacing.

Lighting Size and Placement Guide

Good lighting feels connected to the furniture and architecture around it. Use these measurements as a starting point, then adjust for ceiling height, sight lines and the visual weight of the fixture.

Dining tables

A pendant or chandelier often looks balanced when its width is about one-half to two-thirds of the table width. Keep the lowest point high enough for comfortable conversation and clear sight lines.

Kitchen islands

For several pendants, measure the usable island length, leave breathing room at both ends and space the fixture centers evenly. Two larger pendants usually feel calmer than many undersized ones.

Wall lights

Place wall lights in relation to eye level, furniture and nearby door or mirror edges. For bedside and vanity use, check that the light source will not create uncomfortable glare.
